FIH gives a month to HI and IHF to work out merger formula

New Delhi, Feb 26

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has given the two warring factions, Hockey India (HI) and the Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) a month?s time to sort out their differences over power sharing and form a unified body.

After two days of discussions with HI officials and former IHF president and now its adviser K.P.S. Gill and his team, FIH president Leandro Negre told IANS that within a month both the parties should find a solution to merge.

"We had fruitful talks for the last two days. We have given them a month?s time to put a seal on the the merger agreement. After a month, I will visit India again and then we will sit down with HI and IHF to find a solution," Negre said Sunday.

During the meeting, FIH asked IHF and HI to stop taking pot-shots at each other through the media.

?We have asked both the parties to stop verbal spats. It is time for serious discussions because a unified body is a must for better administration of the game in the country,? he said.

Negre appreciated IHF?s effort to start the World Series Hockey (WSH), starting Wednesday, but said the league cannot have the approval of the world body.

?The WSH is a great concept and it has the potential to give a boost to the sport. But we cannot approve the league. We will only approve leagues which are run by Hockey India. So for the betterment of the sport both HI and IHF have to come together and form a unified body,? he said.

IHF president R.K. Shetty said he will sit down with HI immediately after the conclusion of the 2012 London Olympic qualifiers and try to sort out all outstanding issues.

?Things are moving in the right direction. We have to find a solution quickly. Mr. Narendra Batra (secretary general of Hockey India) has been co-operative and I am hopeful that we will find a solution soon,? Shetty told IANS.

Sport minister Ajay Maken is also working behind the scenes to bring the two parties to the discussion table and hammer out a solution agreeable to all.

Meanwhile, Shetty said that FIH cannot ban players from playing in the WSH, promoted by by IHF along with Nimbus Sports.

?The FIH itself had given in writing last year that it won?t ban players who have signed a contract with WSH before March 30, 2010,? he said.

The other thing, apart from pen-pals (and sometimes these form lasting friendships - but usually only if you met up) you always had met your friends.

Welcome to the 21st Century. You never need lose touch with anybody ever again. Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and the rest... friends are everywhere. And not just people you've know for years and met IRL (as they used to say back in the babyhood of the internet; that's In Real Life). I have some great friends on Twitter and Facebook who I've never met. Many of these I know? because we share something in common; things as diverse as the part of London we live in, to a love of cats, to an obsession with a sports team, to being diagnosed with a debilitating illness.

I've not known these friends as long as my school friends, or friends I met through work or at University (or indeed my family) and our connections may not be as deep. They are no less friends though.

This was brought home to me over Christmas when one of my Twitter friends vanished. A great tweeter and I didn't hear from her for over a month. I was worried... like me she has an auto-immune disease and as far as my imagination was concerned anything could have happened.

Unlike Facebook and LinkedIn where people go by their full names on Twitter you just have a handle and don't even have to give your real name (I don't). This means my friend was lost to me.?

Happily she resurfaced, she hadn't been well (as suspected). These on-line friendships form communities though... and whilst looking for my lost friend I bumped into another concerned friend of hers and so I made a new friend.

Maybe not everyone views on-line friendships like this? Ask anyone, I'm addicted to Twitter (and less so Facebook).

It has to be said though, the increasing (and instant) inter-connectedness of seemingly just about everything fascinates me very much.

Those covers have the part that covers the breakers on a pin that has a spring on it. Square D refers to this as "automatic flush adjustment". On the label it should list the cover part number. It is a common part found in most home improvement stores like Lowes and Home Depot and electrical supply houses.( Go to lowes or home depot and look at them in the electrical aisle and you will see what I'm talking about)

I've looked at hundreds of these, and I've looked at the documentation I can find at the manufacturers site.

What I went to be able to say is:

"A potion of the pin mechanism connecting the XXXXX to the YYYYY is missing, and the XXXXX is not properly connected to the YYYYY at their lower attachment point."

What I want to know is, what is the proper term for the the XXXXX and YYYYY portions?

If a recent study of stock markets and presidential elections is any guide, Obama can start preparing his second inaugural address.

"There's something to this," says Phil Orlando, chief equity market strategist at Federated Investors, the $370 billion investment firm.

There are plenty of other signs often consulted for their political forecasting power, like whether a team from the National Football Conference or the American Football Conference wins the Super Bowl.

This one makes a little more sense: When the economy picks up and unemployment falls, confident investors put money into riskier investments and stocks rise. Voters are likely to reward the sitting president with another four years.

"The stock market reflects trends in the economy," Orlando says. And as any political operative can attest, in a presidential campaign, it's the economy ? you know the rest.

The study was backed by the Socionomics Institute, a think tank studying how a shared mood among a group sways its members' actions. Their researchers dug up data on economic output, prices, unemployment and stock-market performance and matched them to presidential elections.

They went all the way back to the first re-election in 1792, when George Washington beat John Adams and won a second term as the president.

The researchers found a solid connection between the stock market's direction in the three years leading up to Election Day and the election results. Gains of 20 percent or more for the Dow nearly assured victories for sitting presidents. Drops of 10 percent or worse got them tossed out.

Voters returned Calvin Coolidge to the White House in 1924, just as the Roaring '20s started roaring. They booted Herbert Hoover in 1932 while the stock market suffered through a three-year plunge.

The authors of the Socionomics Institute study say everything can be traced back to the prevailing optimism or pessimism. Their organization studies "the social mood." But how do you read the mood of a whole country?

The authors say that the stock market is the best available gauge of how the country is feeling, "because investors can act swiftly to express their optimism or pessimism." Bad day? Time to sell. Things looking up? Time to buy.

"An increasingly positive social mood produces a rising stock market as well as votes for the incumbent, and an increasingly negative social mood produces a falling stock market as well as votes against the incumbent," they write.

To the authors, it's the mood that determines the election, not the stock market. The stock market is just a reliable gauge of the national temper, an incredibly accurate mood ring.

In recent successful re-election campaigns, the connection appears clear. Ronald Reagan won re-election in 1984 following the Dow's 41 percent surge and despite an unemployment rate of 7.2 percent. Bill Clinton was awarded a second term after the Dow gained 63 percent in the three years leading up to Election Day.

But there are misfires. James Madison, for instance, won re-election in 1812 despite a 34 percent drop in the market over three years. George H.W. Bush lost to Bill Clinton even though the Dow rose 51 percent over his term in office.

Doug Wead, a presidential historian who served in the elder Bush's administration, says the stock market theory sounds suspect.

"The stock market isn't even a good indicator of the economy," he says. "You can have the stock market going up while the rich get richer and the poor get poorer."

There's also the danger of oversimplifying ? relying on one number, in this case the Dow's performance, while ignoring everything from scandals and wars to third-party candidates.

In William Howard Taft's last three years in office, the Dow lost 12 percent, and Taft lost the 1912 election to Woodrow Wilson. But if Theodore Roosevelt hadn't split from the Republicans and run under the Progressive Party banner against Taft that year, Taft might have returned to office.

It was a similar story with the first President Bush in 1992. The independent candidate Ross Perot siphoned off votes from both candidates, but historians generally believe more came from Bush's Republican camp. Clinton won with just 43 percent of the popular vote.

BEIJING (AP) ? China said Saturday that it supports the Arab League's proposals for ending the violence in Syria, a striking show of support just two weeks after Beijing vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution backing the league's plans.

The seemingly contradictory stances on the Arab League's proposals appear to reflect Beijing's desire for mediation but aversion to U.N. involvement that could lead to authorizing force, as happened with Libya.

China conveyed its support for the Arab League's proposals in a statement posted late Saturday on the Foreign Ministry's website. That followed a meeting earlier in the day in Damascus between Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhai Jun and Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The statement quoted Zhai as telling Assad that China was willing to work with the Syrian government and opposition, the Arab League and Arab countries to find a solution.

"China supports all the mediation efforts by the Arab League to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis and calls upon relevant parties to increase communication and negotiations to find a peaceful and appropriate solution to the Syrian crisis within the framework of the Arab League and on the basis of the Arab League's relevant political solution proposals," Zhai was quoted as saying.

Also Saturday, a ruling party newspaper said in an editorial that China courageously defied the West when it opposed a nonbinding resolution in the U.N. General Assembly condemning human rights violations in Syria.

The vote against the resolution, which was overwhelming approved Thursday, indicates China's rising influence in world affairs, the Global Times said.

"The country's courage to truly express itself and to calmly stand its ground is worthy of merit," the paper said.

"It is wrong to blindly come down on the side of the West in each vote," it said.

Global Times is published by the Communist Party's flagship People's Daily newspaper and its editorials generally reflect the more pugnacious, jingoistic side of government opinion.

China, which carried out a bloody crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in 1989, has refused to condemn Syria over the violence.

Beijing's authoritarian leaders generally oppose any moves that could lead to humanitarian interventions, such as last year's NATO air campaign in Libya, and have themselves used overwhelming force against anti-government protests in Tibet and the traditionally Muslim northwestern region of Xinjiang.

Syria has seen one of the bloodiest crackdowns in the Arab uprisings that began a year ago. The U.N. says more than 5,400 people were killed in Syria last year, and the number has risen daily. In addition, 25,000 people are estimated to have sought refuge in neighboring countries and more than 70,000 are internally displaced.

A manhunt on Facebook leads to 8 arrests in Germany

Imagine a murder in your neighbourhood. The police release a photofit. They put it on Facebook. You see it?and recognise the murderer: it?s you.

That?s what citizens of the German city of Hanover are afraid of. In Hanover, local police have implemented?a pilot scheme called ?Fahndung via Facebook? ? manhunt via Facebook ? to find criminals through the?power of social media.

They?ve been successful, too: since its introduction in March 2011 the scheme has?led to eight arrests. More than that, it is popular enough to justify plans to roll it out in all of Germany. But?critics aware of the error-prone world of criminal investigation and photofit speculation see a great threat to?data protection creeping up on the country.

Hanover?s ministry of justice and Lower Saxony?s data protection commissioner are more than sceptical of?the project. Photofits aren?t exactly the most reliable source of reference. Even the latest e-fit software simply?can?t compensate for human error. Witnesses often describe the suspect in a distressed state, after getting no?more than a short glance at their face. Unable to recall a lot of detail, the picture turns out to be misleading.

Bad photofits have been around for long enough, but released on Facebook instead of being treated?confidentially, a false assumption would spread like wildfire and have dramatic consequences for the?wrongly accused.

In an attempt to stop the pilot scheme in its tracks, Germany?s data protection commissioner raised concerns?and interrupted Fahndung via Facebook for two weeks in January. The argument: Information about an?official manhunt may never be stored on a server located outside of the state it was issued in.

As fair of a point as that is, Germany?s Secretary of the Interior, Uwe Sch?nemann?(pictured below), liked the Facebook hunt?too much to just let it go. The commissioner?s concerns were dropped after two weeks, when the ministry?announced it wouldn?t publish any official information on Facebook?s US servers anymore. Instead, the police will?only link to the cases on Facebook and lead users to their own server located, of course, in Hanover.

This could go much further. The ?Polizei Hannover? Facebook page has almost 100,000 fans by now ? not?bad for a city that?s home to roughly 500,000 people. 69% of their Facebook fans are aged between 18 and?34, an age group hardly approachable through old-fashioned manhunt calls in print media anymore.

The one fifth of Hanover?s population has already helped to identify and arrest eight criminals, some?involved in cases like sexual assault and child abduction. ?I have therefore decided to keep using the Web 2.0?and specifically the social network Facebook to support the methods of manhunt,? secretary Sch?nemann?told the German daily Zeit.de.

Modern and future-geared police forces in other parts of Germany are keeping a curious eye on Hanover?s?Facebook hunt as well. Berlin and Brandenburg are only two other federal states currently inspecting under?what frame conditions they could implement the scheme locally. A representative of the German ministry of?the interior even mentioned plans for a country-wide enforcement, teaming up with all 50 of Germany?s?police authorities. And Facebook is just the beginning. Next stop is the Twitter manhunt.

Data protection issues are often and ? as they were in this case ? easily dodged. Germany is very likely to have?the scheme in place across the entire country soon. If it continuously proves to be effective, other countries?will follow. Whether or not data protectionists will continue to try and stop this process is another question.?So far it is these concerns against the eight arrests that might not have happened without social media.

Qantas first-half profit drops 83 percent (AP)

SYDNEY ? Qantas Airways Ltd. said it planned to slash 500 jobs after it posted an 83 percent drop in first-half profit on Thursday. The Australian airline blamed rising fuel costs and a series of strikes that temporarily grounded its fleet for the loss.

Qantas said net profit for the six months to Dec. 31 was 42 million Australian dollars ($45 million), down from AU$239 million in the same period a year ago.

A bitter labor dispute last year resulted in months of rolling worker strikes and prompted the airline to temporarily ground its entire fleet. The strikes cost the airline $194 million, Qantas said.

CEO Alan Joyce also said the high Australian dollar had made it difficult for the airline to do business, and said fuel costs for the six-month period were AU$2.2 billion, up AU$444 million, or 26 percent, from the same period a year ago.

The airline said it would cut 500 jobs, withdraw some international flights and revamp its catering and engineering businesses to cope with the financial challenges. None of the positions that are being cut will be moved offshore, Joyce said.

"The highly competitive markets and tough global economy in which we operate mean that we must change," Joyce said. "We need to be ready to take tough decisions, and we must become more flexible and productive."

The airline plans to cut AU$700 million in capital expenditure over two years.
