How Rising Gas Prices are Changing American Lifestyles

by Auto News on March 14, 2012

By now, almost everyone around the country has felt the full effect of rising prices at the pump. And the effects are apparently far-reaching. The increased costs of gas are not only changing driving behavior but are also reshaping American lifestyles as adults reprioritize their spending, a new survey reveals. A report by CouponCabin.com in partnership with Harris Interactive finds that more than one in three adults (36 percent) say they may have to sacrifice things they enjoy just so they can afford to drive.

When surveyed, drivers revealed what they would likely do to keep costs at bay. In the survey, 70 percent of adults said they would likely dine out less often and 64 percent said they would spend less money on entertainment. Almost 40 percent said they may postpone a clothes shopping trip and 22 percent they may cancel paid online subscriptions such as Netflix or HuluPlus. Fifteen percent would consider cancelling cable, satellite, or TV services just to afford to drive.

There is also evidence that rising gas prices are also harming the financial future of many adults. Nearly one in four regular drivers say they may have to go into credit card debt to pay for gas in the next few months.

Even more Americans plan on making changes to their driving habits to ease the cost burden. A remarkable 75 percent of drivers say they will make such critical changes. Over 60 percent respond that they plan to drive less and others say they will carpool or use public transpotaion as an alternative. Only 6 percent of those surveyed plan on buying a hybrid or energy efficient vehicle as a result of rising gas prices.

CouponCabin.com announced it will start the ?Great Gas Giveaway? sweepstakes to give drivers the chance to win some free gas through the expensive summer season. The grand prize winner will be awarded with up to $1,500 worth of gas while other winners will get $50 gift cards for gas.
